Some Thoughts About What To Watch

Some Thoughts About The Movie Gone Girl (2014)

The first time I saw Gone Girl (2014) I was watching it in a bar, surrounded by people I hate (including myself, obviously) half reading the closed captions. I started roughly 30 minutes in (she was freshly missing) and stopped watching with roughly 30 minutes left (she was at her old boyfriend’s giant second home, but before murdering him).

I just recently watched the entire movie, while I was working (so was like 90% paying attention to the film).

*Law and Order voice* These were his thoughts. *dun* *dun*

  • He should have done the Borat “my wife” at least once
  • The movie strongly enforces the stereotype that women be crazy.
  • The movie also strongly enforces the stereotype that men be lazy, video game playing losers that suck the life out of women and don’t even bother to know who their friends are or what they do all day.
  • It’s nearly a sort of “all sides” reactionary response to the #metoo movement. “See, women can be liars.”
  • Who is buying that she ends up getting away with this though. Not one person bothered to look at the tapes at the house where she killed her ex boyfriend, or see where that guy (NPH) was the day of her disappearance?
  • My thing for tallish woman with shortish, dirty blonde hair has been activated…indirectly threaten to murder me mommy? (oh god)
  • What was her motivation? The manipulation seemed to be a thing that happened multiple times. Just fun? The cheating broke her? Was she just like bored?

As of posting Gone Girl (2014) is streaming in MAX (fka HBO Max fka HBO GO fka HBO).
